This two-part interview with Dean from early July in the Rutland Herald proves that the life of a small-town governor isn't all ambitious nation-building schemes and attending fabulous gay civil union ceremonies. Indeed, it seems to mostly involve dealing with intensely parochial issues that couldn't possibly interest any non-Vermonter. It also shows Dean to be — unlike certain current White House occupants — articulate and knowledgeable about the issues he's supposed to be handling.

Regular DeanBlog contributor Carl Withak has a long post full of photos (and video?) from the convention floor about Dean's speech: With each line the Governor completed the audience became more energized. By the time he had completed the above statement he had at least 80% of the crowd off their seats, screaming and waving Dean signs! No other speech before or after received anything like this. At best, a speaker could count on 30-40% of the crowd to get off of their seats and applaud. This show of support was deafening. ... As the good Doctor began to wrap things up he seemed to feed off the audience. His face become red, nearly the entire convention on their feet, screaming his praise, Governor Dean bellowed, "I want my country back! We want our country back!" From the looks of it, California is definitely Dean Country among the party faithful. ... John Kerry and the Wisdom of the Crowd

It is generally said that there is wisdom is crowds. And this is often the case. However in election season those crowds turn into mobs and the wisdom disappears. This latest Kerry flap is just the latest example of this. The majority of the conservative blogosphere is roiling with righteous indignation about Kerry, hoping that this is their "October surprise". (Fortunately, a few of my favorites including James Lileks , Rod Dreher , and La Shawn Barber are not drinking the Kool-Aid). After hearing many conservatives scream for years about wanting to campaign on the issue, it is disheartening to see so many jumping on the bandwagon of a non-issue. I suppose what keeps me from being a cynic is being willing to assume the best of people, not the worst. Some might think that this goes against my Christian theology (original sin and all that) but it doesn't. WBUR Boston's public radio show The Connection has a segment on Dean: The Buzz for Dr. Dean Sell the sizzle, not the steak. It's an old advertising maxim that applies whether you're selling T-bones or political candidates. In a field of nine Democrats, that most Americans still can't name, people in Iowa have a definite advantage. With the Iowa caucuses, the first official contest for the Democratic presidential contenders, just six months away, voters get the chance to have coffee and more coffee with the candidates. Right now, the word from the cornfields is that former Vermont Governor Howard Dean is the man to beat. He's against the war with Iraq. For gay civil unions. He's raising money and expectations and restarting an old debate over whether Democrats with progressive views can win elections. I haven't listened to it yet - what did you think of it?
