Liberals in the Heartland

Despite the banner above, I am unenthusiastic about the idea of Hillary Clinton in 2008, and will not pick a Presidential candidate until 2007 at the earliest. At the moment, I'm most intrigued by the idea of a Gore-Richardson ticket. However, I also have an eye on a favorite son, Senator Russ Feingold, who has proven he can win in the Midwest while standing firm on core Democratic issues. Here's an example of how he does it:
"I am enjoying reading many blogs, and am fascinated by their immediate reporting that is covering the important issues of the day. Many of the positive comments I have been lucky enough to read about my work relate to the fact that I was the only member of the U.S. Senate to oppose the USA PATRIOT Act. That experience taught me a lot, but one thing I learned for certain is that millions of ordinary citizens support efforts to make sure the government doesn't try to take more power than it needs. Resisting overreaching by the federal government is appropriate and, yes, even patriotic. I feel very strongly about this, and have made constitutional issues in general, and First Amendment issues in particular, one of the central focuses of my work in the U.S. Senate."

Conservatives can't be too dogmatic about big government in this state.

regarding Hillary boosterism, I do want to encourage all my fellow posters here to discuss candidates in the context of larger principles, exactly as Brian is doing. I dont expect anyone else to be interested in my picks :)

I'll change the headline banner up there to be more neutral. Also, I think the Obama Feed is dull, I'd be happy to replace it with a Feingold Feed, or some other who generates enough headlines :)

re: feingold - too principled.

not that that's a negative in my book, but it doesn't win elections. if i recall correctly a few years ago feingold refused to spend beyond a certain limit and that almost screwed him over against a more "flexible" opponent.

Would it be practical to try feeds for all those considered contenders (Clinton, Kerry, Richardson, Biden, Feingold, Edwards, Vilsack, Bayh, Blagojevich...ok, maybe there are too many)? I'm just worried about maintaining neutrality this early in the process. What about some sort of "Campaign 2008" feed? Or, in keeping with the grassroots, build-from-the-bottom-up roots of Deanism, something about 2005 or 2006?
